SEA ROACH (TARANKA) DRIED GUTTED FISH, KUZMICH, UKRAINE

Found in the Black, Caspian, and Azov Seas, the Rutilus heckelii, a type of roach (Cyprinidae family), frequents brackish waters. They even venture into freshwater areas like river mouths and estuaries. Interestingly, these fish, along with similar roach species, are transformed into a popular beer snack in Russia and Eastern Europe! Known as "taran" or "taranka," they're made by air-drying and salting the fish.
